What does it mean to listen – not just to hear, but to attentively attune to the world around us? Building on Sonic Acts’ 30-year legacy, the seventh edition of Ecoes – a special, double issue – delves into the art of sound and presence. From Salomé Voegelin’s remixing of the ‘curatorial order’ to maximalist composer Charlemagne Palestine and Loma Doom’s cerebral DJ sets, this magazine reimagines listening as a form of attention – at once a method, an ethics, and a poetics.
A continuation of the Sonic Acts Biennial 2024 project Touched by Sound, Sève I.V. Janssen excavates the media archive of Dutch performer and instrument maker Michel Waisvisz. Meanwhile, Elias Anastas of Radio alHara discusses the Palestine-based station’s efforts to sustain (inter)national solidarity amidst escalating Israeli violence. In their collaboratively written article, Shortwave Collective proposes another (radio) listening exercise, asking: ‘Do we listen to the same things, differently?’
The landscape too becomes a sonorous body, resonating with its own rhythms. Along the Wadden Sea, Cocky Eek reflects on the subtle acoustics of the mudflats; researcher Sarah Agerbaek evokes the silencing magic of snowfall; and, by listening to the soil, Juan Cortés uncovers the devastating impact of monocultural farming in Colombia.
Martina Raponi, operating as noiserr, examines how audism has shaped society, drawing on Deaf researchers and artists to develop a theory of ‘the unheard.’ This edition also includes a contemplative report on The Listening Room – Sonic Acts’ 8.2-channel sound exhibition and online spatialised platform. Additionally, NTS resident Elena Colombi speaks to raving futures, sonic fictions, and the queer avant-garde.
In What Can’t a Body Do? Indigenous scholar M. Murphy reminds us that bodies are entangled in the messy affairs of history. Through her visual essay Models of Maintenance, Alina Schmuch uncovers hidden infrastructures beneath our feet – sewage, riverbeds, water storage, and testing samples.
Spread across several pages, Sammy Lee's psychedelic contribution Cymatics translates auditory phenomena into vibrant, intricate patterns. Mobilising listening against borders and across temporalities, Jacek Smolicki walks into Białowieża forest, an ancient woodland straddling Poland and Belarus. Finally, sibling duo Hannah and Charlie Pezzack’s collaboration concludes with a Welsh folk song, lingering in the ears.

<a href="https://sonicacts.com/community/lukas-de-clerk">Lukas De Clerck</a> explores a niche of archaeological research in music – the aulos is a historical Greek instrument that Lukas analysed and reinterpreted by a luthier in modern times. In the absence of historical partitions or written information about how to recreate technique on the instrument, Lukas navigates this impression as an artwork or living sculptural object. He interprets information from the rare archaeological resources and visual art of the classical period to recreate both playing technique and possible sound timbres with the instrument. With his contemporary approach to drone, post-minimalist music, and contemporary folk, we find a deeply satisfying and compelling, even playful set of songs, timbral exercises and compositions.
‘The morphology of the aulos is defined by its reeds. The tubular memory inside the plant’s fibre will ensure it closes and opens naturally, like the mouth that blows breath inside. The reeds are the core, the sound source – the naked instrument. They behave like two oscillators, bending high-pitched notes into beatings. The pipes are a context, a channel for the sound. They create a narrative.’ An essential document of new music meets contemporary archaemusicological research via Stephen O’Malley of SUNN O)))’s label Ideologic Organ.

This volume explores the elusive nature of time and our shifting experience of it. Time, a concept long interrogated by relativity theorists and quantum mechanics, remains a mystery at the core of human understanding. Art, film, and music make the abstract palpable, but as technology evolves, it continuously disrupts and redefines our relationship to time. This book is a homage to the human experience of time—half filled with essays on its conceptualization in technology, culture, and literature, and the other half with intimate interviews with composers and musicians about their work with time.

All Thoughts Fly: Monster, Taxonomy, Film is a narrative assemblage of prose and image that is at once personal, historical, and theoretical. Continuing their inquiry into the curious presence of taxonomies of monsters in Early Modern European science, <a style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/sasha-litvintseva-and-beny-wagner">Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner</a> explore the etymology of the word ‘monster’ – from the Latin monstrare, meaning ‘to show,’ ‘to demonstrate,’ or ‘to reveal.’ Picking up on this, they position monsters as prisms for modes of seeing and deciphering the world around us.
When treated as a perceptual apparatus, the monster becomes a lens for probing the medium of film, examining its relationship to indexicality, chance, corporeality, and metamorphosis. This book extends the multimedia project the pair began with their film A Demonstration (2020). As artists and researchers, Litvintseva and Wagner’s collaborative practice interrogates the thresholds between the body and its surroundings, knowledge regimes, and power.

This is the first comprehensive monograph of the Sonic Acts Festival in 2000. The richly illustrated volume captures the ninth edition of the festival, in which a special focus was placed on artists working with computer-generated images and software tools. The book not only surveys ‘the world behind the laptop’ but traces through-lines from earlier editions of the festival to contemporary developments into the fields of media arts, electronic music, and multimedia presentations.

Published to accompany the <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://2024.sonicacts.com/">30th anniversary edition of the Sonic Acts Biennial</a>, Ecoes #6 draws inspiration from the landmark book The Spell of the Sensuous (1996), authored by the ecologist and philosopher David Abram. Under this spell, the magazine explores the web of relations – experienced and perceived through the ‘sensuous body’ – that evoke our rootedness in the larger ecology of earth beings.
Ecoes #6 opens with an essay by Abram himself, where he reflects on the migratory movements of salmon, cranes, and butterflies, illuminating the intelligence that guides all scales of life, even the microscopic cells of our bodies. Navigating sensory exchanges across species, theorist Astrida Neimanis traces the interconnected lifeways of kelp and otters. Reflecting on mystical encounters, writer Elvia Wilk speaks to Hannah Pezzack about the pressing weight of climate catastrophe, whereas Juan Arturo García narrates his film Time, Displaced, about a hidden nuclear reactor in Bogotá, Colombia.
Themes of environmental interdependence, intuition and sensing bind the artistic and theoretical interventions in this issue. In dialogue with Margarita Osipian, artist Annika Kappner discusses speculative technologies and inherited memories across generations. In notes from the making of their collaborative film Soot Breath // Corpus Infinitum, Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva reflect on tenderness and its potential to counteract systemic violence. On the shores of the Salton Sea, an endorheic lake in California, Lukas Marxt uncovers former atomic test sites, while Elena Khurtova and Anika Schwarzlose focus on soil contamination.
The texts in Ecoes #6 consistently return to the idea of the porous body – a surface of metamorphosis and exchange. Xenologist Adriana Knouf explores radical transformations and the flux of human and non-human entities, while Sasha Litvintseva and Beny Wagner consider digestion as a constant site of interchange between the self and the environment. In the sonic realm, François J. Bonnet, in conversation with Anton Spice, composes meditative soundscapes that blur the line between perception and sensation. And, equipped with her hydrophone, Susan Schuppli captures the sounds of melting glaciers, offering an aural glimpse into planetary deep time.

To mark<a style="color: #000000;" href="https://sonicacts.com/archive/sonic-acts-festival-2012-travelling-time"> Sonic Acts Festival 2012: Travelling Time</a>, Important Records and Sonic Acts released a live recording of ‘Blues Dhikr Al-Salam (Blues Al Maqam).’ This captivating performance features <a style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/catherine-christer-hennix">Catherine Christer Hennix</a>, a visionary Swedish musician, poet, philosopher, mathematician, and artist. A devoted student of Hindustani raga master Pandit Pran Nath, Hennix was a contemporary of American avant-garde composers such as John Cage, Henry Flynt, and La Monte Young.
Performing with her expanded just intonation ensemble – including Amelia Cuni, <a style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/robin-hayward">Robin Hayward</a>, <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/hilary-jeffery">Hilary Jeffery</a>, and Michael Northam – Hennix offers a transcendent exploration of sound. Spanning nearly an hour, the track draws on the tradition of the pentatonic blues for voice, brass, computer and live electronics in a mixed-media environment. Listeners are enveloped into a mesmerising tapestry of quivering drones and haunting vocals, invoking a sense of the sacred and the infinite.

Cycles of water whirl through this body of texts. Sometimes they are heavy with ‘toxic muck’ and sometimes as light as bubbles, crystals of ice, or the hair on coral larvae. Occasionally they will speak to a feeling, but will often address a very specific port. Most importantly, all of them are the results of artists’ experiments and artistic meandering around the topic of water.
In her visual essay, artist Annika Kappner invites you to fill a bathtub – or choose another body of water – and embark on a journey to explore your relationship with water. In conversation with Hannah Pezzack, Stefanie Hessler reflects on the 'oceanic feeling' that permeates her curatorial practice. Japanese-French artist Tomoko Sauvage speaks with Maud Seuntjens about her fascination with water clocks (clepsydras), as imagined in her installation Buloklok and other sound pieces. Meanwhile, Dutch artist Philip Vermeulen discusses his works Boem BOem, an expansive environment featuring violently bouncing tennis balls, and More Moiré, an immersive, disorienting light and sound installation, with Arie Altena.
Composer Tarek Atoui and field recordist Éric La Casa discuss listening and recording within the harbours of cities such as Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut, Istanbul, and Porto, which they visited for Atoui’s project Waters’ Witness. Three ports along the River Thames play leading roles in Jac Common and Katy Lewis Hood’s dialogic experiment. Therese Keogh delves into an offshore dumping ground of dredged material traveling from Awabakal and Worimi Country in Australia, toward the world’s largest coal export.
Alice Johnston Rougeaux takes us to the Cloud Bar – a vantage point for watching clouds in Lincolnshire, on the east coast of England. In Reef Lullaby, a chapter from the book The Sounds of Life (2022), Karen Bakker mediates on the ways coral reefs listen, explaining that coral larvae are able to sense sound through hairs (cilia) that coat their tiny bodies. Lucia Dove uncovers early fifteenth-century floods in the Grote Waard, a farming region between South Holland and Brabant that was subsequently submerged. In their ongoing ice dialogue, Hannah Rowan and Anastasia (A) Khodyreva share thoughts on freezing and thawing, while the members of the Brackish Collective filter, steep, and boil their liquids, reflecting on the historical origins of cooking and the cultural significance of certain ingredients.

ORE is a composition by Swedish sound artist <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/bj-nilsen">BJ Nilsen</a> that investigates the acoustic dimensions of mining. Developed over four years, it incorporates field recordings from iron ore and coal mining sites in Norway, Russia, and the Netherlands.
Refined during a residency at <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://inagrm.com/en">Ina GRM</a> in Paris, the piece explores the societal and cultural impacts of mineral extraction. With its hypnotic, droning quality, ORE captures the mechanistic rhythms of mining operations – momentous and industrial, yet also profoundly musical. Nilsen masterfully weaves the mechanical and the organic, crafting a sonic experience that is as evocative as it is immersive.
This special extended version includes a digital download, <a href="https://sonicactsbjnilsen.bandcamp.com/yum">which can be redeemed on Bandcamp</a> via the enclosed code, and a cryovial containing 2.0 ml of iron ore concentrate from Kirkenes, Norway.

Tonaliens is a Berlin-based group investigating the inner dimensions and outer limits of Just Intonation. It was formed in 2014 by Amelia Cuni (voice), Werner Durand (invented wind instruments), <a style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/robin-hayward">Robin Hayward</a> (microtonal tuba), <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://sonicacts.com/community/hilary-jeffery">Hilary Jeffery</a> (trombone), and Ralf Meinz (live sound, electronics). The group came together shortly after the release of the software version of the Hayward Tuning Vine, an interface for exploring microtonal tuning that allows for direct and intuitive interaction with the pitches normally hidden between the keys of the piano. Coming from diverse backgrounds, the musicians were eager to explore this harmonic space, and thus the Tuning Vine ‘acted first as a catalyst, then as a map, and finally as a spaceship’ (Hayward) that enabled them to navigate those areas that largely remain obscured.
The music of Tonaliens has so far been focused on a very specific area within the microtonal space that was discovered by mapping out the first three harmonics of three tubes of Durand’s self-invented Pan-Ney instrument. They named this area the Tonaliens chord, and both recordings on this double LP – two live performances from 2015 – are based on it.
Sides A and B are recorded live in a church in Amsterdam, the Vondelkerk, during <a style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;" href="https://portal.sonicacts.com/2015">Sonic Acts Festival 2015: The Geologic Imagination</a>. ‘What is the nature of electronic music?’ asks Douglas Kahn, a professor at the National Institute for Experimental Arts at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Kahn locates his answer in ‘electricity and electromagnetism’, ‘the crack of lightning and its echo in thunder’, or what he calls ‘The Aelectrosonic’.
This compact publication centres on Kahn’s thought-provoking essay, tracing the origins of electronic music back to the 19th century, when Thomas Watson listened to sounds carried by telephone wires. Alongside an introduction by Arie Altena, it includes visual materials documenting the evolution of sonic art forms. The Aelectrosonic was published to accompany the 2011 instalment of the Kontraste Festival, Imaginary Landscapes.

‘Most of the universe is dark,’ writes Roger Malina, an astronomer and Distinguished Professor of Art and Technology at the University of Texas, Dallas. This is because, as he explains, the human senses ‘filter out’ what cannot be perceived. ‘Even a cursory look at the history of architecture and the visual and sonic arts will make it abundantly clear that there is an intricate linkage’, writes professor, curator and author Timothy Druckrey in his essay for Vertical Cinema. The essay offers a view into the multimedia history of ‘sensory architecture’ and large-scale cinematic architectures of the last century. It simultaneously provides a setting for the Vertical Cinema project in the context of monumental cinematic imaginary. Vertical Cinema is a series of ten commissioned works printed on 35 mm celluloid and projected vertically with a custom-built projector in 1:2.35 aspect ratio or vertical cinemascope. All together, they comprise a 90-minute programme solely for projection on a monumental, vertical screen. This is the starting point for Vertical Cinema, the third and final Kontraste Cahier. The small publication presents, the essay by Timothy Druckrey, on the rich history of expanded and exploded cinema, along with stills and texts about the ten commissioned works by internationally renowned experimental filmmakers and audiovisual artists.

With a ‘feature well on oil’ that dives deep into the ‘petrocapitalist noxiousness’ of our time, Ecoes #4 tells the complex personal stories of artists and researchers, inspiring and transforming different perspectives of reality. The fourth edition interweaves works from Sonic Acts OVEREXPOSED residents with interviews from FieldARTS 2022 participants and other creators and thinkers from our Underexposed mentorship scheme, all considering the composite ways toxicity can be buried, leaked, and unearthed across scales of daily life and deep time. From personal experiences of cancer treatment, caregiving and its aftereffects, to building relations with mounds, piles and heaps all around us; from the long-lasting impact of the 2002 MV Prestige oil spill off the coast of Spain, to ecological colonialism covering destroyed Palestinian villages with Aleppo pine; from misused restoration of the seminal oil pool sculpture by Noriyuki Haraguchi, to poetry by Russian queer feminist poet Galina Rymbu that ‘historicises the chokehold on oil, gas, and grain supply, now crystallised in the invasion of Ukraine’. This issue of Ecoes offers a powerful immersion into art during times of pain, toxicity, illness and crude capitalism.

A portmanteau of ‘ecology’ and ‘echoes’, it is rooted in environmental concerns and investigates how auditory practices shape our understanding of contemporary worlds — human and nonhuman.
